The Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH) is forwarding the following advisory to healthcare providers, "Potential for Falsely Low Blood Lead Test Results from LeadCare® Analyzers" from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If you have any questions or concerns, please call PADOH at 1-877-PA-HEALTH (1-877-724-3258) or your local health department.

Summary
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safety communication warning about the use of Magellan Diagnostics' LeadCare® analyzers (LeadCare, LeadCare II, LeadCare Ultra and LeadCare Plus) with venous blood samples because they might result in falsely low test results. FDA is now advising that Magellan Diagnostics' LeadCare® analyzers should no longer be used with venous blood samples. The safety alert does not apply to capillary blood lead test results collected by fingerstick or heelstick. The purpose of this Health Advisory is to notify state and local health departments, healthcare providers, and laboratories about CDC's re-testing guidance in light of the safety alert.

Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

I am honored to serve as the President of the Pennsylvania Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics. Our chapter has a long history of amazing leaders who have elevated our chapter work and provided tremendous opportunities to advocate for children and for the profession of pediatrics. Most of us went into pediatrics with a passion for, and dedication to, the children of our communities. While health care is in the midst of change, if we work collaboratively and keep our focus on what is right for children, collectively we have the potential to steer this change into a positive direction for our patients and our practices. We are fortunate to work with an awesome staff and many, many colleagues and organizations with like-minded principles.

The future of pediatricians and the children we are privileged to care for, depend on us to speak up and give them a voice. Please join me and the rest of the PA AAP Board in seizing the opportunity to make a difference for Pennsylvania families.

Best regards,

Denise Salerno, MD, FAAP
President

On June 22, 2016 ACIP announced recommendations for the 2016-17 influenza season. Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), also known as the "nasal spray" flu vaccine, should not be used during the 2016-2017 flu season. AAP endorsed those recommendations. On June 27, 2016, Dr. Remley (AAP CEO) offered further guidance to practices.

ACTION STEPS FOR PRACTICE CONSIDERATION FROM PA AAP

  • Read the ACIP and AAP statements and inform your staff
  • Pre-book extra injectables NOW
  • Cancel your intranasal orders NOW (also tell staff NOT to respond to confirmations on your pre-booked FluMist or you may be financially responsible)
  • For VFC orders: Find your order form that was already submitted, cross out FluMist, change your order numbers for the other injectable flu vaccines and re-fax your order form ASAP to VFC
